About CDBC
Hi there, my name is Paul Hodgson.
I am the proud Owner and Operator of Competent Driving BC, which means I take care of my own scheduling, invoicing, accounting, maintenance, and all other issues involved in running a company, from a home office.
This, along with also operating as a Transportation Service, as well as offering other Driver Services, allows me to provide the highest quality training, for the most reasonable cost, to residents and companies in the lower mainland and associated areas of British Columbia.
My company has been in operations since 2010 and I provide full range service throughout British Columbia, Canada.

Some Information About Paul
I received my initial car license in 1971 when I was 16.
Two years later, British Columbia brought in complete License Classification – 1 for semis, 2 for buses, 3 for dump trucks, 4 for small buses & taxis, 5 for regular automobiles, 6 for motorcycles, with testing procedures applicable to each level. How was that different? Because up to that time, in most provinces and US states, you would just have something like a ‘regular’ license and a ‘truck’ license; and in some cases so long as you had some kind of license you could buy the other – for instance, around 1975 I became a Class 1 driver in Manitoba; how? I paid them a dollar extra at the DMV.
So in 1973 I attained my Class 3 license; my first job out of High School was driving Concrete Mixers.
Following a leg injury in 1974, needing a job where I wasn’t on my feet too much, I attained my Class 4 license so I could drive taxis and small buses. And in 1975/76 I actually became the youngest person to own my own taxicab with a local company.
I’ve spent most of my working life in driving positions, including operating a multiplicity of trucks and buses as well as working as a Driving Instructor and Administrator for western Canada’s largest Driving School for many years. I’ve also worked as an Instructor Trainer, preparing many new people to enter the industry.
These days I have my Class 1 Driver License, as well as my Class 4, 5 & 7 Instructor License; I also hold a Driving School License as well as a Passenger Transportation License.
During my career, assessing, evaluating, and examining drivers has occupied me considerably. For two years I worked as an ICBC Driver Examiner, conducting Class 4, 5, & 7 Road Tests; more than 4,000 of them, in fact. I have also been authorised as a TAO (Training Assessment Officer) in private industry, to examine applicants for both Driving Instructor and Class 4 Driving Licenses.
Additionally, I have worked with DriveABLE as an evaluator, as well as Community Therapists, assessing abilities and training rehabilitation requirements for drivers who have suffered psychological and/or physical injury; this work included the development of new routes for their assessments, including for drivers without previous experience behind the wheel. DriveABLE and Community Therapists operate in BC under the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles, these days referred to as RoadSafetyBC.
Further, I have conducted Driver Evaluations for a number of companies and corporations, including in no particular order: Accenture, Fortis BC, North Shore Taxi, UBC Lands & Building Services, UBC Trek, Canada Post, Shell Canada, District of North Vancouver, City of North Vancouver, West Vancouver Municipality, the City of Richmond, and the Vancouver Aquarium.
